The reason most people don't put a rug where they actually need one — under the dining table, in the hallway, where the dog comes in — is that cleaning it means a professional or a replacement. This one folds up and goes in a machine. That's the entire pitch, and it changes where you're willing to put a rug.

Three colourways: Black & Burgundy (a faded, low-contrast Persian medallion), Black & Gold (darker and more mottled, with warm flecks) and Beige (the same pattern washed out to a pale, quiet neutral). Same size, same construction, same price.

• It folds down to 18.5 × 12.2 × 8.3 inches. That's the manufacturer's shipping carton, which is a fair proxy for what you're putting in the drum. If a box that size fits in your washer, so does the rug.
• Non-slip TPR backing. No separate rug pad needed to stop it sliding on hard floors.
• Low pile, 0.14 in. Clears door swings and sits flat under furniture legs and dining chairs.
• Doesn't shed. Chenille pile — nothing to vacuum up in week one, and nothing for pet claws to snag.

Common questions

Will it actually fit my washing machine? Folded it occupies about the volume of an 18.5 × 12.2 × 8.3 inch box, and it weighs 15 lbs — heavier than a duvet, lighter than a full load of wet towels. A standard front-loader handles it. A compact or apartment-sized machine may not. Measure your drum before you order if you're unsure, and email us if you want a second opinion.

Is 6 × 9 the right size? For a living room, the front legs of all your seating should sit on the rug — 6 × 9 does that for most three-seater-plus-chair layouts. Under a dining table you want the chairs to stay on the rug when pulled out, which usually means 8 × 10 or larger. See our rug size guide, or measure it out on the floor with masking tape first.

Do the three colours look the same in person? They're the same design at different values. Beige reads much lighter in a bright room than the photograph suggests, and Black & Gold is closer to charcoal than true black. If the exact shade matters, email us before you order.

Do I need a rug pad? No. The TPR backing grips hard floors on its own.

Is it soft underfoot? It's a low-pile rug, so it's flat rather than plush. That's the trade for being washable and fitting under furniture.

Why doesn't it say 100% polyester? Because it isn't. The pile is polyester chenille and the backing is TPR — a rubber. Our supplier states the pile fibre as polyester, so that's what we state. We'd rather be exact than round up.
